Right now, it's a frigid time on the Sunshine Coast of BC. Winter is gradually but firmly taking its destructive hold on several beloved plants that have never before seen such extreme cold in their growing environment.
In the sunroom, thanks to a small heater, things are different. Even my banana plant is still thriving. The pineapple I grew has long since given its small but delicious fruit. That was quite an event in 2016!
Who would have known these were to be the only pineapples we would eat during our stay? The truth is, although Dole has a plantation that is covered in pineapples and all kinds of touristy things to bring them more and more money in the stores, pineapples are way out of most folks budgets. For instance in Safeway you're paying over $2 per POUND. I weighed one of these beauties...and sadly it weighed about five pounds.
$10 per pineapple? I don't think so.
It was quite a shocker to realise that in Sechelt, an “almost” island, accessible only by ferry or air, those very same Dole pineapples cost $5.47 EACH.(4.17 US)That's after traveling all that way from Hawaii to here. Some things in life just don't make sense.
And please, take the time to smile and enjoy the crazy pineapple video song at the same link!
