Two days ago a man in Toronto went public and complained bitterly he had spent $8100 on a fake Master’s degree, from King’s Lake university but never received it in the mail. Talk about absolute shamelessness, and so sorry, those of us who’ve battled to complete our education in a real and meaningful traditional way just don’t feel any sympathy for you at all, Erwin Sniedzins! |
Then he told me he would be my anaesthesiologist. He said there'd be an additional charge for his services...would that be okay? I agreed, as I did want to wake up afterwards, but I wasn't pleased.
A month after, his bill arrived, together with the extra $10 charge. I was furious. “Just pay it,” my hubby advised. “It’s ten dollars!” So he paid it, while I simultaneously complained to the BC Medical Association that my consent to the extra charge was obtained under duress. The experience still rankled. Sure, it was “only” ten dollars, but what about folks who didn't have that kind of money to spare? And multiply that by the number of procedures each day.
Be the squeaky wheel!
Two years later I noticed he had been found culpable and struck off the medical roll after a boy undergoing a tonsillectomy died.
So yes, you get bad apples in any profession you can think of. But it's important to uncover them, without fear. Our society depends on you.
I used to get a giggle out of my highly qualified orthopedic surgeon friend, now retired. When he was on call he’d wear a totally ridiculous tee shirt. On it was a pic of Donald Duck, and the words, RELAX...I’M YOUR DUCKTOR! Admittedly in those days humor was appreciated. Certainly no one ever doubted his skills. But these days it’s wise to be suspicious, and with good reason.
Scammers never rest
For generations the time and money spent on education has been important in the advance of our civilization, learning and abilities to help others. The sacrifice of social life and being a poor student for years was offset by the ultimate respect and earnings that eventually arrived.
Seems like a whole lot of folks have decided to forego this noble tradition in recent times. After all, the scammers reasoned, the education component required is just way too stringent for the average clever computer geek. Let's just get rid of it.
And so it came to pass that numerous phoney baloney online “universities” sprang up. They have transcripts, recommendations, accreditations, and you don't even need to spend any time on campus ( there is no campus of course.) As long as you're prepared to lay down a couple thousand dollars you can have a really impressive degree.
You can be a doctor, a nurse, a pharmacist, a councillor, a lawyer, an accountant or a business MBA. Anything your heart desires. And you don't attend classes. You just pay the money. The scary thing is, there are hundreds of people with these bogus degrees working in their chosen fields in Canada and USA.
