Lots of things about being an elder aren't all they're cracked up to be. You're supposed to be wise, attending exercise classes, preferably botoxed, endlessly cheerful as you watch your physical decline slowly take place, and above all, you should never interfere with the delightful grandchildren in your life. It's an unwritten code. Seriously.
This week a heartbroken grandmother shared with me how she’d received a very short text from her dear 20 something granddaughter Avery thanking her for a scarf she’d knitted. |
Her loving granddaughter then forwarded this to her mother, saying, “Tell Grandma to cut this crap... I don't have time to read stuff. She’s getting too old.”
Grandparents are struggling, trying to make sense out of a world that seems insane. Many older ones are leftovers from a generation that could never, in their wildest dreams have imagined things the new generation takes for granted as being necessities of life.

- Texting is the order of the day. Not talking to each other; texting often 300 texts a day. Let's face it, in the natural order of things, you just wouldn't have all those “friends.” It's become impossible to see people walking without having their eyes glued to their phones.
- Some food for thought, with this link that I hope you’ll read. It's about the literacy rate in England, but I'm quite sure it applies in many countries. No wonder young people have problems finding jobs. This is a heartbreaker for anyone who cares about the future of our language and our young people.
