Not that long ago we used to joke about the “little man in the fridge.” This imaginary being only had one function: his job was to put the light on. People would spend time stealthily opening that fridge to see if the light was on when it was closed, but that little man fooled them every time! Unless of course the light had actually burned out. |
That was before the video game days, the TVs prominent in every single place you can think about, including my doctor’s office, and of course iPods, iPads, email, and most importantly, the ubiquitous WiFi, now even satellite beamed down into the Amazon jungle, is available just about everywhere for minute by minute coverage of wars and natural disasters available from satellite. |
Yes, if you can bear the idea, you can photograph everything the refrigerator contains. If you're a multi tasker you can play games while you make dinner. You can shop from your refrigerator by pushing a couple of buttons. In fact you can do your banking so you can go shopping! Of course you can access the Internet. And the list goes on.
Security--the big issue!
It's worth noting hackers can enter your home even if you don't invite them in. Some devices may contain wireless technology that sends data back to manufacturers. Hackers could be able to turn such sensors on and use them to monitor activity in a home.
Wifi computer controlled appliances and devices are becoming commonplace in the home. It's important to assess how many you have, from baby monitors and onwards.
- Make sure they're disabled if you don't want to use them.
- If you do want to use them always check the manufacturers sites to check on latest security updates, then install them.
- It's important to have a strong password at least 8 characters, and include symbols plus numbers in it.
