This week, it's my turn...
Things are in a rapid downturn at the moment in Sechelt. The local paper is full of letters to the editor, decrying our sad status with the ever-decreasing water supply. Those of us who are desperate to keep most of our plants alive are now forced to resort to the only means we have of getting non-potable water for gardens. It's a hose, drawing water from the old sewage treatment plant. One hose, for the entire population. |
The watering hole
We had a laugh, at my expense. Then, obviously out of pity, the next guy in line, Doug, filled up my little pails in less than a minute. That hose has good pressure...
Forewarned should be forearmed
You see, in 2012 there was a shorter drought period. It was a clear warning of things to come. But nothing was done to prepare our town for this. It was something to be left in abeyance until 2016, when they would discuss it again. Ironically, there is a lake with plenty of water, but the District needs permission from another arm of government to siphon to a greater depth. They say they're just waiting for this. Is it any wonder people get thoroughly disillusioned with those in position to help, and who just sit and let things happen, then say, "Oh dear!"
There is an E-Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, August 25, at 7 pm. You can either attend or participate later by sending in a form at www.sechelt.ca.
Even though things are dire, particularly for our small farmers ( someone didn't think that one through when they decided they wouldn't be exempted from Stage 4, no watering.) It's a terrible situation for them, and heartbreaking for all of us who encourage their enterprise and hard work.
