Well, it's frantic gardening time, with the annual desperation of keeping up with the weeds. Note, I didn't say overtaking them, that would be impossible, but each day I would exert myself a little more, trying at least to overcome my sudden physical problems in bending, carrying and so forth.
It takes a while sometimes to stop denial!
The diagnosis
The nice looking young technologist turned out to have a sadistical streak as she firmly pressed over and over the same tender area. She refused to share her findings with me, but did ask if my doctor had mentioned anything about hernia! That kinda gave me a clue. That afternoon I was in the doctor’s office again, making plans to see the surgeon later on this month.
It is an inguinal hernia, in the groin area. Trust me, you don't want one.
Weed trials 2016
I walked out and was taken aback by their vigor as their bright yellow little blossoms danced merrily, mockingly in the breeze. Where had they all come from in just a few days?
As I gazed in horror at this unwanted crop my attention was caught by two of my Mason bees suddenly settling on those weed blossoms. I could hardly believe it! They actually liked those big weeds? Preferred them over the other beautiful cultivated flowers offered everywhere at this time?
I was stunned, and also very grateful for this practical lesson on why weed flowers are so important. We tend to pay lip service to this kind of thing, but when you actually have the bees, and they demonstrate their needs and preferences close up. Observing their preferences helps bring on a quality, varied perspective.
It's actually becoming quite interesting to adapt to this situation, and figure out new gardening strategies for folks like me, who are not quite able to deal with the normal exercise involved in gardening. Yay for those wonderful raised vegetable beds! That's a winning strategy!
